About Singapore Airlines Airbus A380s

Singapore Airlines started flying again to Indian destinations from mid-March. The airline is flying to Mumbai and Delhi with the help of Singapore Airlines Airbus A380. Singapore Airlines flew mumbai for the first time after two years and almost after a gap of one year to New Delhi. It was a great sight for the aviation spotters on both the airports to see the massive superjumbo Airbus A380 back.

Singapore Government has been working on reducing the Covid restrictions from last three months, following which the government has also decided to remove multiple covid tests which were needed on arrival for the passengers from 26th April. Fully vaccinated passengers will not have to undergo any covid tests on arrival in Singapore. SIA sees this as a great opportunity to focus on the Indian markets and is hence planning to use the superjumbo Airbus A380 on multiple Indian destinations.

SIA will be majorly focusing on New Delhi and Mumbai and is also collaborating with the low-cost carrier Scoot to increase its presence in the Indian aviation market after the pandemic.

SIA will be flying to 13 cities across India

SIA and scoot will be flying to 13 cities across India just like Qatar Airways. Singapore Airline will be flying to major Indian cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahemdabad, Hyderabad and Kochi focusing on premium customers. On the other side, Scoot will be flying to destinations like Amritsar, Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Trivandrum, and Visakhapatnam where demand for a low cost carrier is more.

Singapore also works as a transit destination for passengers. Since the Indian covid restriction for connecting travel has been lifted, SIA just like before the pandemic is aiming to connect the Indian passengers to Australia and West Coast.

Singapore Airlines is trying hard to recover in the Indian market and is keeping the fares low. Tourism travel is expected to increase with the covid restrictions being lifted in Singapore. Emirates president Sir Tim Clark has once more said that the airline has no such plans of not flying to Russia. Sir Tim says that such steps will not be taken by the airline until it is instructed to do so. The Emirates president says that the airline plays an important role in keeping Russia well connected to the world and thinks that the passengers flying on the Dubai – Moscow route have nothing to do with the current situation in Ukraine and they should not be penalised for it.

In a recent interview with BBC’s Middle East business correspondent Sameer Hashmi, The Emirates president said that the airline will not stop operations on the Russian routes until the owner of the airline which is the Government of Dubai directs him to do so.

Emirates president Sir Tim Clark said,

If we are told to stop we will stop, unless we are told otherwise, we will continue,” Sir Tim said. This message from Emirates isn’t new. Rather, it is a line Sir Tim has repeated since other airlines began pausing their Moscow flights and banning Russia-based airlines from their airspace two months ago.

Emirates continues operating daily flights to Moscow

Emirates continues to fly on the Dubai-Moscow route daily through its flagship aircraft Airbus A380-800. The airline operates one or two flights everyday between Dubai and Moscow. FlyDubai which is another low-cost airline owned by the Government of Dubai also flies on the Dubai-Moscow route twice a day.

The Emirates president says that it is not his decision if the airline will operate on the Russian route or not. The airline carries humanitarian supplies on the flight for Russia into Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport. “We are catering to people who are on the periphery of the main issue here, and that is probably the way the government looks at it,” he told the BBC.

Previously, the Emirates boss has highlighted the importance of facilitating NGO and diplomatic passenger traffic in and out of Moscow. He added as far as cargo goes, Sir Tim says Emirates doesn’t carry goods subject to sanctions. “All we’re doing is being an enabler, facilitator, without taking a political position on this for the time being,” the Emirates President said in March.

The west may not approve the airline’s decision pf still flying on the Russian route but the airline has no such plans. The Emirates president says that the airline is making good profits, most of the Emirates Airbus A380s are in service and only a few Emirates Boeing 777 are parked. The President says that we are short of crew members which is the reason the airline is not able to operate fully. He also said that Emirates is not facing any kind of demand shortage.

“If we can have all our aircraft flying today, 270 of them then we would. I can’t because I am just short of crew,” Sir Tim told the BBC. The pandemic saw Emirates lay off thousands of workers, but now Sir Tim wants to hire 3,000 to 4,000 cabin crew and pilots to cater to that roaring demand and get those parked planes back in the air.

American Airlines rolled out the first quarter financial results for 2022 today, the airlines says that it is recovering fast towards pre pandemic performance and expects the same in the upcoming future. American Airlines says that the efforts of all the American Airlines employees and crew members made it possible and is looking forward to the same performance results in the second quarter as well.

In the first quarter of the financial year 2022, the airline has achieved 84% of the revenue generated in the same quarter of 2019. American Airlines is the founding member of oneworld. The airline is using the year 2019 for charting airline recoveries as it was the last year when things were normal before the pandemic.

American Airlines made $8.9 billion in the first quarter which represents the exact sum of 84%. The airline says that even after such a promising performance, it made a net loss of $1.6 billion in the first-quarter. However , if we exclude the special items, the net loss drops to $1.5 billion. American airlines says that the performance has been good and expects even better results in the next quarter.

The airline in a recent press release gave a statement, American Airlines said that it”was profitable excluding net special items in March.” Its prospects look even better going forward, as it “expects to be profitable in the second quarter based on the current demand trends and fuel price forecast.”

American Airlines had different aspects which helped it perform better and make 84% revenue of the pre pandemic levels. The airline made most of the revenue through the passengers which accounts for $7.8 billion which is 88% of the total revenue. The Airline made $364 million through cargo which accounts for 4% of the total revenue.

The Airline is looking forward to pay its $15 billion of debt by the year 2025 and ha already paid approximately 4$ billion already. The Airline managed to pay the $4 billion debt in the second quarter of the year 2021. Looking to the future, American CEO Robert Isom, who recently took over from Doug Parker, stated:

“The outstanding progress we’ve made is only possible because of the amazing efforts of the American Airlines team and we’re optimistic about the continued recovery in the second quarter and beyond. The demand environment is very strong, and as a result, we expect to be profitable in the second quarter based on our current fuel price assumptions.”

The American CEO Isom’s prediction may be true because the airline is already performing quite well and is making record revenues in the last few months. The second quarter is going to be the deciding factor for the airline and we hope that American Airline keeps performing the same way and recovers from the pandemic losses soon.

What do aircraft horns sound like?

First things first, the aircraft horns don’t sound at all like your traditional car horn. Instead, it sounds more like an alarm, and it is kind of annoying. In May 2019, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines uploaded a video showing what’s the sound of an airliner’s horn. As described by the airline itself, when the button is pressed, “it sounds as if three steamboats are passing under the plane.”

All airplanes have a ground call button, which is similar to a horn, as explained by KLM a couple of years ago. It is a tiny switch on the overhead panel, next to the switch pilots use to contact cabin attendants.

How are airliner’s horns used?

The tiny switch on the overhead panel says “GRD CALL” or “GND.” It depends on the aircraft model. As explained by KLM, the pilots use the switch only when they seek the attention of someone on the platform. They don’t use it to call someone from the crew because, most likely, they won’t hear it at all or would not know what to do, according to a pilot on Quora.

Aircraft horns are used only during specific emergencies. And pilots are not the ones that use the horns the most; instead, ground crews use the switch the most when performing maintenance in the cockpit, as it is how they seek the attention of their colleagues on the ground.

“Whereas horns in cars are mainly used as a warning system, the horn aboard an aircraft is primarily a form of functional technology, which is indispensable when the aircraft is undergoing maintenance in the hangar,” said KLM.

How are airliner’s horns not used?

Pilots almost never use horns because they do not need to do so. Moreover, as posted by some pilots, if they try to use the horns while preparing for departure, most likely they wouldn’t be heard over the noise of the aircraft itself and the airport activities surrounding it.

In fact, the horn doesn’t work when the aircraft is in flight because the signalling system is turned off, explained KLM.

So, while the horn is primarily a means of communication, it is not the only way the aircraft can send a signal, warning of failure. To ensure being the safest way of transportation, aircraft are redundant when it comes to safety.

Instead, modern planes can also emit a signal that sounds like a siren to warn engineers when a system breaks down or when there is a fire or another sort of failure. Moreover, the signals vary so that engineers and mechanics know exactly which system is under threat.

Air Canada is set to start flying its converted Boeing 767 cargo aircraft to Frankfurt Airport later this year on a regular basis. Rather than disposing of its Boeing 767 aircraft, the Canadian carrier decided to put them to use with a second life as freighters following the huge demand that such types have seen since the onset of the pandemic.

Frankfurt Airport is one of the busiest in Europe when it comes to freight traffic. In addition to its regular passenger traffic, the airport welcomes freight in the bellies of passenger planes, such as British Airways’ A380s, alongside dedicated cargo aircraft such as those flown by Lufthansa Cargo. Despite suppressed passenger traffic 2021 was a record year for cargo at Germany’s busiest airport.

Air Canada’s Freighters To Frankfurt

Throughout the pandemic, Air Canada continued to operate a robust schedule of transatlantic flights from its home to Germany. Undoubtedly, cargo will have played a role in these flights. It seems that demand for cargo on such routes is so high that air Canada has enough for dedicated freighters.

While the airline is yet to reveal a start date for these regular flights, it will start operating freight-only flights to the key cargo hub later this year. To facilitate this arrival, the airline has increased its cargo handling capacity at the airport by 35%. The airline already uses 5,000 square meters of space for its cargo operations at the facility. This won’t be the first time that the converted aircraft have visited Frankfurt. Commenting on the planned transatlantic launch, John Lloyd, director for Europe, Middle East, and India at Air Canada Cargo, remarked,

“This represents a significant improvement for Air Canada Cargo in Frankfurt as the cargo base plays a key role in our global route network. In addition, we are increasing our potential by ramping up handling with the expected start of regular freighter operations at this key hub.”

A large Air Canada hub pre-COVID

Frankfurt has traditionally been a large hub for Air Canada, even before the pandemic. According to schedule data from Cirium, the airline’s operations at the airport peaked in July and August 2019 with 186 flights to the airport each month. This equates to 6 flights a day from multiple Canadian cities.

Across most of the industry, the worst month experienced was April 2020. Interestingly, this wasn’t the case for Air Canada’s Frankfurt Airport Operations. February 2022 sees 77 flights scheduled (2.75 per day). July and August are set to be the busiest months this year with 155 flights each (5 a day). It should be noted that this has the potential to change as the COVID-19 situation develops.

Air Canada has passenger flights to Frankfurt planned from four points of origin this year,

YUL – Montreal
YVR – Vancouver
YYC – Calgary
YYZ – Toronto

In 2019 the airline additionally operated some flights from Ottawa (YOL).

Lease pacts canceled

While handing over the airline to the Tata Group, the Indian government also terminated the sale and leaseback agreement of 21 Air India Dreamliners. According to a report by the Economic Times, the government paid all the outstanding lease payments, thus bringing the 787s under full ownership of the carrier. India Ends B787 Sale

However, terminating such an agreement prematurely comes with penalties, which the Indian government has also cleared off.

ET spoke with people familiar with the matter, who commented,

“The lease agreements were very costly. Also, the pandemic has made aircraft cheaper and the underlying leasing rates more feasible. Now, of course, the Tatas will have to ink fresh SLB agreements, if they want to do so.”

Indeed, it remains to be seen whether the new owners will sign a new agreement with an aircraft lessor to raise funds or figure out other fleet management plans.

Fleet optimisation

The Tata Group has its work cut out for itself. The Government of India attempted to iron out some issues plaguing the carrier before the handover. It has taken over the majority of the carrier’s debt and cleared the dues to all vendors and suppliers. In addition to that, as pointed out in the ET report, around 1,300 crore (approx. $174 million) worth of arrears have been paid off to employees.

However, many believe that the cost to turn around AI’s fortunes could run into billions. The Tatas have taken over 15,000 crore (approx. $2 billion) worth of AI’s existing debt, but it does not include the expenses of fleet renewal and refurbishment.

The airline’s Boeing 777s are in dire need of a makeover to align with the Tatas’ vision of a world-class carrier. The present configurations of these aircraft are not suitable to compete with most other international carriers. The management will have to decide whether it’s more economical to bear the mammoth costs of refurbishing the 777s or phase them out with better alternatives.

Then there are the grounded planes that haven’t clocked in any flying hours in a while for want of new engines. Again, fitting them out with new engines will cost millions per aircraft, and the Tatas could decide to get rid of them entirely.

Should AI be merged with other airlines under the Tata brand – Vistara being the top candidate – it could also benefit from Vistara’s existing longer range 787-9 airplanes. However, Bhaskar Bhat, the chairman of Tata SIA Airlines, which owns Vistara, has squashed rumours of any immediate merger.

It seems that AI’s new owners have a long road ahead to solve the carrier’s fleet issues.
