About Singapore Airlines Airbus A380s

Singapore Airlines started flying again to Indian destinations from mid-March. The airline is flying to Mumbai and Delhi with the help of Singapore Airlines Airbus A380. Singapore Airlines flew mumbai for the first time after two years and almost after a gap of one year to New Delhi. It was a great sight for the aviation spotters on both the airports to see the massive superjumbo Airbus A380 back.

Singapore Government has been working on reducing the Covid restrictions from last three months, following which the government has also decided to remove multiple covid tests which were needed on arrival for the passengers from 26th April. Fully vaccinated passengers will not have to undergo any covid tests on arrival in Singapore. SIA sees this as a great opportunity to focus on the Indian markets and is hence planning to use the superjumbo Airbus A380 on multiple Indian destinations.

SIA will be majorly focusing on New Delhi and Mumbai and is also collaborating with the low-cost carrier Scoot to increase its presence in the Indian aviation market after the pandemic.

SIA will be flying to 13 cities across India

SIA and scoot will be flying to 13 cities across India just like Qatar Airways. Singapore Airline will be flying to major Indian cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahemdabad, Hyderabad and Kochi focusing on premium customers. On the other side, Scoot will be flying to destinations like Amritsar, Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Trivandrum, and Visakhapatnam where demand for a low cost carrier is more.

Singapore also works as a transit destination for passengers. Since the Indian covid restriction for connecting travel has been lifted, SIA just like before the pandemic is aiming to connect the Indian passengers to Australia and West Coast.

Singapore Airlines is trying hard to recover in the Indian market and is keeping the fares low. Tourism travel is expected to increase with the covid restrictions being lifted in Singapore. Dubai and Maldives have been the most travelled destinations by the Indian passengers as they were open to travel through the pandemic.

Catching up

A few months ago, we discussed the dominance of Airbus over Boeing in the Indian market. Fast forward to this week and the American giant has made significant progress in India. From having its signature MAX jets not flying to clocking a new order to reaching a settlement with its biggest customer, the tide is turning.

Today, the manufacturer has firm orders for 214 737 MAX 8s from two customers, Akasa Air and SpiceJet. The former is Boeing’s newest client, having secured an order for 72 737 MAX jets at the Dubai Air Show this week. The latter is Boeing’s largest operator, with an order for 155 MAX 8s and 50 options. Of that, 13 aircraft were delivered before the grounding in March 2019, bringing outstanding orders to 132.

Including options, 264 is not an insignificant number, and Boeing has the potential to rack up more orders from airlines like Jet Airways in the future. While Airbus’ dominance is not broken yet, there is another shift taking place.

How they stack up

For comparison, Airbus currently has orders for over 650 A320 family aircraft in India. A bulk of these come from market leader IndiGo, which has another 550 A320neo, A321neos, and A321XLRs on order from the European manufacturer. Go First and Vistara comes in at the second and this place respectively.

Air India is another major Airbus client but has no aircraft on order as of today. However, with Tata buying the carrier, there is a chance of a large order in the coming years as the airline modernizes its fleet.

The large order book and diverse clients mean that Airbus will be more resilient to shocks in the market. The fall of Jet Airways set Boeing back years in its India growth, with over half of all narrow-body orders wiped out. However, the planemaker is back now, and it is looking to make a splash.

All could go well

If all goes well for Boeing, SpiceJet will start to take deliveries and fly the 737 MAX by the end of 2021, its current timeline. Meanwhile, Akasa Air’s success could mean subsequent orders for Boeing, setting up another IndiGo-like relationship in the market. However, all of this hinges on several variables, and nothing is set in stone.

For now, Boeing will be happy with its progress this week. With two airlines both flying the MAX in India, there is a chance it can regain a larger chunk of the vast South Asian market and continue its growth.

Aerospace manufacturer Airbus has left the Dubai Airshow with 408 orders (269 firm orders and 139 commitments) for its aircraft. The planemaker eclipsed its rival Boeing, which received 101 orders over the four-day show. Airbus benefited from a huge order on the opening day from Indigo Partners and also received its first order for the A350 Freighter.

A successful Dubai Air Show for Airbus

Airbus received 408 orders during the Dubai Airshow 2021, outperforming competitor Boeing by a considerable margin. Of Airbus’ 408 total orders, 269 were firm orders and 139 were commitments to purchase.

Airbus said in a statement,

“In the first major airshow since the COVID-19 pandemic struck two years ago, customers demonstrated confidence in the recovery of the aviation sector and also in Airbus by placing orders and commitments totalling 408 aircraft (269 firm orders and 139 commitments).”

Airbus began the Dubai Airshow on Sunday with a massive order for 255 A321neo Family aircraft from equity firm Indigo Partners. The agreement included an order for 29 A321XLRs, Airbus’ extended-range A321-family plane expected to debut in service in 2023.

The Indigo Partners deal includes:

Wizz Air – 102 aircraft (75x A321neo + 27x A321XLR)
Frontier – 91 aircraft (A321neo)
Volaris – 39 aircraft (A321neo)
JetSMART – 23 aircraft (21x A321neo + 2x A321XLR)

On the second day

The orders continued to come in for Airbus on the second day, with lessor Air Lease Corporation (ALC) committing to a deal for 111 aircraft. The commitment covered the full commercial range of Airbus aircraft. Notably, ALC became the first customer to order the Airbus A350 Freighter.

ALC’s order includes:

25x Airbus A220-300
55x Airbus A321neo
20x Airbus A321XLR
4x Airbus A330neo
7x Airbus A350F

Airbus commented,

“The agreements covered the full range of commercial aircraft families, including a first commitment for the A350F freighter derivative.”

ALC and Airbus also announced “the first-ever joint ESG scheme in aircraft procurement – a joint Sustainability Fund – to foster industry decarbonisation solutions.”

Further orders for Airbus

The European planemaker secured additional orders in the final days, including a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Jazeera Airways for eight A321neos and 20 A320neos. Nigerian airline Ibom Air also became a first-time Airbus customer with a firm order for three A220-300s and seven A220-100s.

Airbus also received orders for two A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) from the United Arab Emirates Air Force (UAEAF) and a new export order for two A400M new generation airlifters from the Indonesian Ministry of Defence.

Upping production of single-aisle jets

Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury has said the manufacturer plans to increase production of single-aisle aircraft to 65 single-aisle jets a month by summer 2023, up from 45 a month this quarter. The company is also exploring the possibility of upping this to 70 planes in 2024 and 75 in 2025.

Faury told Reuters,

“What happened (in Dubai) is important, because together with other prospects or deals to come, it gives substance and … evidence that the demand we see for rate 70, 75 will be sustained for many years.”

Airbus is expected to decide on production rates by the middle of 2022. Faury claims that recent talks with French and German suppliers have gone well.

Faury added,

“We are going to 65: that is decided … We are executing this. But we have not decided anything beyond.”

Emirates is increasing its operational Airbus A380 fleet this year, but there are still a few airports that wont see the Emirates Airbus A380 for this winter. In this Article, We will list 25 such airports that will no longer see the Emirates A380 this winter.

A summary

It seems a long time ago, but in winter 2019 (W19), some 50 airports across the world welcomed Emirates A380, analysing schedules information from OAG indicates.

The double-decker was used to 31 countries globally, with the UK, Germany, Australia, the USA, and France the top-five. The A380 had 25,229 total flights (two ways combined) that winter and almost 13.1 million seats, or over four in ten (42%) of Emirates’ total.

What’s happening in winter 2021?

Fast-forward to W21: Emirates will deploy the type to 30 destinations. These include six that returned on October 31st, the start of the current season, along with Düsseldorf on October 23rd and Manchester on September 1st.

As two A380 routes have been added since W19 (Amman and Istanbul), the actual number of airports served in W19 but not now is 25, with a list provided below.

Some 20 countries will see quad-jet (down by 11). The USA is up one place to third and replaces Australia, which unsurprisingly has been relegated to 18th on account of its international borders only just reopening. France and Egypt complete the top-five table.

Driven by the depressed demand environment, the A380 has recovered just half of the seats and flights it had. The type has recovered far less than Emirates’ smaller-capacity B777-300ERs (now at 75%), benefiting from higher freighter capacity and fewer premium seats. Airline capacity normally follows demand.

Where won’t be served this winter?

While it absolutely might change if more international borders and restrictions are eliminated for fully vaccinated travellers, the following 25 airports are not currently down to see Emirates’ A380s this winter. There is, understandably, a significant focus on Asia-Pacific, together with fewer ‘core’ markets in Europe and North America.

Asia-Pacific is at just 4% of W19 capacity

While it’s hardly a revelation that Asia-Pacific is very badly hit, the fact that A380 capacity there is at just 4% of the W19 level is eye-opening. It is a stark reminder of how much work there still is to do to increase vaccination rates, open borders, and to reduce other restrictions to grow confidence and demand.

In contrast, Latin America has 95% of W19 A380 capacity (only Sao Paulo sees the type), followed by Europe at 68%, the Middle East with 65%, and North America at 62%. Only Africa is ahead (+1%). Why? Because Cairo has risen to a twice-daily A380 service, significantly increasing capacity.

Emirates is hard at work, proving that the Airbus A380 still has a place in the post-pandemic aviation industry. With the airline’s entire 777 fleet already busy for some time, the airline has to use the A380 to add capacity now. By the end of the year, it hopes to have reactivated around 50 A380s and restored 70% of its capacity.

About the Six more Routes

Emirates will relaunch A380 flights to six destinations on Sunday. Some of these have seen the Emirates A380 since the height of the pandemic but have lost the jet again somewhere along the way. According to schedule data from Cirium, the A380 will return to the following routes:

AMS – Amsterdam – The Netherlands
GRU – Sao Paulo – Brazil
HAM – Hamburg – Germany
JNB – Johannesburg – South Africa
MAD – Madrid – Spain
MXP – Milan – Italy

Each of the routes will operate daily through November, except for Milan, which has just 22 rotations scheduled for the month. With the addition of the above routes, Emirates will fly the Airbus A380 to 25 destinations from its Dubai home.

Increased capacities on other routes

While the A380 is returning to these routes, other routes will see increased capacities from Sunday. Frankfurt will be to welcome a double-daily Airbus A380 from Sunday. Meanwhile, Vienna’s capacity will increase, with 38 rotations planned for November, up from a daily A380 rotation in October.

Vienna is one of just six routes that won’t have a firm daily (30) or double daily (60) rotation with the A380 in November. Other routes which have different numbers of rotations are,

LHR – London Heathrow – 180 rotations
DME – Moscow – 55 rotations
DUS – Dusseldorf – 44 rotations
VIE – Vienna – 38 rotations
MXP – Milan – 22 rotations
YYZ – Toronto – 21 rotations
CAN – Guangzhou – 4 rotations

November will be another exciting month for fans of the airline’s premium economy cabin. Emirates will take the penultimate A380 ever to be delivered during the month, meaning one more aircraft with the premium cabin will join the fleet. One would expect Emirates to bring an A380 with premium economy to the Dubai Airshow. It could be this aircraft, depending on its delivery date.

According to ch-aviation.com, the airline currently has four A380s with the cabin, all delivered within the past year. The final two deliveries will boost this to six aircraft. Each of the aircraft equipped with premium economy contains four classes. At the rear on the main deck are 338 economy seats, preceded by 56 premium economy seats at the front of the cabin. On the top deck, alongside the bar at the rear of the aircraft, are 14 first class suites, followed by 76 business class seats.

British Airways A380 finally lands in Madrid after undergoing a heavy maintaining break. British Airways Airbus A380 Ready to Return

British Airways Airbus A380 which is G-XLEA is the oldest in the airline’s fleet. The aircraft has been serving from last 8 years and is now ready to comeback for furthur airline operations. The aircraft was the first to come out of the Teruel Airport storage facility in September and flew to Manila for a test flight. The test flight was needed as the aircraft was in the Teruel Airport Storage Facility for a long time.

British Airways flew the A380 all the way to Manila when it has A380 engineers based in London. The British flag has a contract with Lufthansa Technik to complete the most significant services required by the aircraft. G-XLEK flew out to replace G-XLEA in maintenance on Saturday.

Having rested in the Philippines, the same crew brought G-XLEA back, leaving Manila at 03:30 this morning. After 15 hours in the air, the jet touched down in Madrid at 12:34, having overflow Frankfurt at 43,000 feet on the way. According to ch-aviation.com, G-XLEA is now 8.97 years old. The jet is worth $45 million, having completed 28,107 flight hours until July 31st.

British Airways will initially only return to the skies with a handful of its giant Airbus A380 aircraft, but signs exhibitors by the airline suggest that the entire fleet will remain with the airline. For example, G-XLEA would be the obvious choice to retire, being the oldest aircraft and needing a significant service. Why pay for costly maintenance if you don’t intend to keep it around?

The airline also recently extended its maintenance contract with Lufthansa Technik regarding the fleet. The contact has been extended until at least 2027, covering all 12 aircraft, a good sign for those yet to return to the skies.

It won’t be long before the British Airways A380 becomes a regular sight in the skies above London once again. Remember we mentioned that G-XLEA had overflow Frankfurt earlier? In under two weeks, on November 8th, the giant of the skies will begin flying between Frankfurt, London Heathrow, and Madrid. The airline needs to retrain the crew on the aircraft before it launches into long-haul missions once more. From early December, the jet will resume long-haul flights to Dubai, Miami, and Los Angeles.
