United Airlines will operate hourly flights between New York and Washington. The airline has decided to start a shuttle service between Newark Liberty International and Reagan National Airport with an hourly service. United is also planning to increase its operations outside New York City. The changes will be made from next Sunday, with the launch of the IATA winter time schedule.

Air services provide a significant link between cities around the world, whether they are near or far. This is the case on domestic and international flights and saw Lufthansa offering frequent domestic connections from its Frankfurt and Munich hubs before the pandemic. Now, United Airlines is also targeting a specific route.

United Airlines Newark-Reagan shuttle Corridor

United today revealed a new shuttle service between New York’s Newark Liberty International Airport and Washington’s Reagan International Airport. Operating seven days a week, the airline will fly 18 times in each direction between 06:00 and 22:00.

18 flights will operate over 16 hours, meaning that the service will run almost hourly. As a result, United Airlines will operate more services between the two than any other airline. Five daily flights are planned between Newark and Washington Dulles Airport. Meanwhile, flights from LaGuardia to Dulles will bring the total daily flight count to nine.

United Airlines will operate roughly 32 daily services between New York’s airports and Washington’s airports. This represents a 78% increase in flights and puts it above any other airline connecting the two cities.

According to aviation data experts Cirium, United has 1,718 flights scheduled between the two cities in November (in both directions). The next most prolific carrier is American Airlines, with 1,050 services planned. Delta Air Lines has 901 services planned, while Southwest has just 132.

An upgrade for passengers

Passengers aren’t just getting an improved flight availability from the airlines, but also a better service on the aircraft. From October 31st, United will only operate aircraft with a first-class cabin from its New York Airports, including the Boeing 737 MAX 8 and the CRJ-550.

With this, United Airlines revealed that it would have around 7,000 premium seats of offer out of New York City. Again, this is more than any other carrier, though it is also the most that United has offered during its history.

As mentioned, one of the aircraft with a first class cabin is the CRJ-550. The aircraft has just 50 seats but is the first in the world to offer first class with such a small cabin. At the front are ten first seats. The remaining 40 seats are split evenly between economy plus and economy.

Commenting on the announcements, the airline’s SVP of Domestic Planning and United Express remarked,

“By flying spacious, modern planes out of the New York City area, we’re not only giving our customers more flexibility and choice but we’re also delivering a reliable, premium experience overall… Our customers who regularly travel between Washington, D.C., and New York have told us they value convenience and comfort above all else, and United is committed to providing the high level of service they’re asking for.”
